Men Should Not Neglect Skin Care
Most men don’t want to spend a lot of time fussing with skin care. This was true for me also; however, now that I have been using effective skin care products for over five years, I can’t imagine going without them. They have made an enormous difference for me, and have helped me avoid lower eyelid surgery for what once was a considerable amount of lower eyelid wrinkling.
Men after 50 More Susceptible to Skin Cancer
It has been my observation that men tend to have less sun damage (as noted by blotchy hyperpigmentation) in their 30s to 50s. Nevertheless, there appears to be a catch-up to women when men reach their mid 60s and begin to present with pre-cancerous actinic keratoses. By the 70s, skin cancers are prevalent in both sexes. Men are more susceptible to melanomas after age 40. A bald area is equally susceptible to sun damage.
4 Effective Skin Care Programs for Men
We have four effective skin care systems. They contain physician-strength products and are available only through a doctor’s office, and are not available over-the-counter or through spas. We base our recommendations on a number of factors that include age, color of the skin, history of sun exposure and/or tanning, degree of skin damage from sun exposure or smoking, and previous treatments for pre-cancerous conditions or skin cancer.
Obagi Nu-Derm Skin Care System for Men with Sun Damage, Facial Aging
For men who need an aggressive skin care system, we recommend the Obagi Nu-Derm system. These men have sun damage, a dull, sallow lifeless skin color and facial aging. The Obagi Nu-Derm System is easy to use because the products are numbered, and AM or PM appears on the bottle for easier use. I used this system for three years and can attest to its effectiveness. The Obagi Nu-Derm System is the most common system prescribed in my office for both men and women, and we consider this to be the “gold standard” in skin care against which other products are measured.
Obagi-C Rx or MD Forte Skin Care Systems Effective for Men's Skin Care
For men who have less sun damage or simply want a system with the fewest numbers of effective products, either the Obagi-C Rx System or the MD Forte System can be used. The Obagi-C Rx System contains 4% hydroquinone and would therefore be the favored system to correct sun damage. Both systems are effective.
Tretonin (Retin-A) an Add-on to Restore Collagen in Men's Skin
Although neither of these systems calls for the use of tretinoin (Retin-A), we nevertheless feel that tretinoin should be included in most advanced skin care programs. Tretinoin is, therefore, prescribed as an “add-on” to both these skin care systems. Tretinoin brings in new blood supply to the important collagen and elastic fibers in the dermis and helps restore both bulk and health to this part of the skin. This is the key ingredient that creates a radiant appearance.
Kinerase for Men with Least Sun Damage, Aging Skin
Our least aggressive system of advanced skin care products is the Kinerase system of skin care. One can “graduate” from a less aggressive system to a more aggressive system depending on response to the system and continued facial aging.
Eye creams and sunscreens are also important for most men interested in better appearing, healthy skin.
Begin Your Men's Skin System with Cleaning Your Face with Cleanser Every Day
No matter what skin type you have, clean your face every day. Men have approximately 20% oilier skin and significantly larger pores than women. Basically, this means you get dirtier. A good skin cleanser is a great start to healthier skin, keep it in the shower and use it every time you shower.
