How Alpha Hydroxy Acids Work
By Peter T. Pacik, M.D., F.A.C.S.
The AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) preparations are the first really effective over-the-counter products introduced that scientifically have proven to lessen the appearance of aging skin. Some of the commonly used AHA's include glycolic, citric, and lactic acid found naturally in sugar cane, citrus fruit and sour milk.

This acid has the most beneficial effect on the skin comparing to any other fruit acid because of its small molecular weight property, its ability to penetrate the outer layer of the skin. Glycolic acid causes desquamation (flaking or peeling off) of the rough, dry, thickened outer layer of skin. This effect occurs quickly causing an almost immediate improvement in the texture of the skin resulting in a more elastic suppleness and smoother feel. This higher concentration of 15% Glycolic acid increases the support molecules (collagen) of the dermis (inner layer of skin). It is in this later effect, which over the period of several months slowly reduces wrinkles.
Benefits:
  - Decrease fine lines and wrinkles.
  - Improved skin elasticity and collagen support structure.
  - Removes and lessens superficial pigment changes - age and sun spots, uneven and blotchy reddened patches.
  - Smoothes and softens skin.
  - Improves skin texture and clarity.
  - Unclogs pores - clears acne.
  - Reduces pore size.
  - Normalizes oil production.
  - Increases the skin own ability to hold moisture.
  - Reduces blemishes and blackheads.
  - Promotes rapid cellular turnover which improves skin color and produces a radiant glow.
  - Age defying formula which benefits male and female, children and teens. Universally used by all skin type and color.
