Aging
Hands
By
Peter T. Pacik, MD, FACS
In
recent weeks, we have had a number of patient inquiries
about aging hands. Most often these patients are concerned
about the onset of increasing brown spots, though at times,
this is combined with wrinkling.
Historically,
there have been fewer procedures available for the hands
than the face, even though both areas are affected by aging.
For the face and hands both exfoliation and resurfacing
are successful because of the body's ability to regenerate
new layers of skin; however, facial skin has a much greater
capacity to regenerate new cells. It is for this reason
that procedures involving hands need to be more conservative.
Hands can be peeled; however, a lighter solution of TCA
(15% trichloroacetic acid) should be used and should only
be performed by a physician experienced with TCA peels.
Inappropriate and aggressive peels on the hands can cause
skin breakdown and scarring.
Advanced
skincare products can also help the appearance of your
hands. Hands will tolerate the same exfoliation creams
that are applied to the face. When I was using the MD Forte
Level III products, my daily regimen included the use of MD
Forte Hand and Body Cream once or twice a day on
my hands, arms, legs and feet immediately after towel drying.
For
the past year, I have been using the Obagi
Nu-Derm System, which I use on my ears, neck and
hands, as well as my face. The photo below shows the contrast
between my treated hands and the untreated forearms. The
tan scaling appearance of my forearms contrasts vividly
with the lighter healthy appearance of my hands. I treat
only my hands to show my patients the benefits of treating
their hands, but I would recommend that these products
be applied into the forearms to accomplish a more even
blending. In addition to treating the hands, it is worthwhile
to treat other exposed areas such as the ears, neck, and
bald scalp for men. These areas are vulnerable to breakdown
and can be rejuvenated with the same products that work
for your face.

Apart
from the cosmetic aspect, treating your hands will keep
the skin healthy and avoid the cracked skin so common in
colder climates. In years gone by, every winter I personally
struggled with recurrent cracking of skin, made worse by
harsh surgical hand scrubs. With my current programs, I
have not had problems with cracked skin.
