Antioxidants, Anti-aging
and Skin RejuvenationIntroduction - Part 1 By Peter T. Pacik, M.D., F.A.C.S. In a recent email, I discussed the history of Skincare-MD and the excellent strides we have made with products that help reverse the signs of facial aging and improving sun damaged skin. There is no doubt that a good skin care program has many benefits, as thousands of users would attest to. We also know that individual consumers have their favorite routines. Some people have extremely complex daily routines that they continually expand and alter based upon clinical research and their own experimentation, while others want simplicity. The basic MD Forte Advanced Skin Care Daily Regimen works; I have used it for myself and the patients in my practice for many years. In my own practice, I have found that some of our patients feel that adding Vitamin A, C or E enhances their results; whereas others feel that the face and eye creams are enough. As so often happens in situations where we are rapidly progressing in our knowledge, it becomes a matter of trial and error, and individual preference. This is one of the reasons that feedback from our customers and our patients is so important. Ongoing research will help us become more knowledgeable. Where do we go from here? It is always difficult to crystal ball the future; nevertheless, certain patterns are becoming evident. As more research is being done on the value of antioxidant Vitamins A, C and E, it is becoming clinically apparent that these vitamins can be integrated into a skin care program that uses glycolic compounds for anti-aging benefits. The question that remains to be answered is how much additional benefit will be gained from the use of topical anti-aging vitamins. Anti-aging programs can be very complicated, with a host of new concepts and complicated terminology. Science at the present time is only in the "infancy stage"; we need considerably more experience and follow-up before definitive conclusions can be made. Topicals are not as regulated as are other medicines; and therefore, scientific data lags behind the "hype." I am in the process of reviewing abstracts dealing with Vitamins A, C & E to determine how these vitamins can be used effectively. There is much that is unknown. MD Forte products and others do contain antioxidant vitamins; however, studies are limited showing the benefits of adding these vitamins separately to an existing advanced skin care program using glycolics. If any of our readers have experience with anti-aging products, we would like to hear from you. In our future educational emails, we will explore the different mechanisms of skin aging and discuss the actions and benefits of the individual antioxidant vitamins A, C and E.
