Botox® - FDA Approved
By Peter T. Pacik, M.D., F.A.C.S.

I thought our readership would be interested in knowing more about Botox® which was FDA approved on April 15, 2002. Botox® is an attenuated (diluted) form of Botulinum Toxin, initially used to control spasm of the eye muscles. It has been used for a number of years to smooth and eliminate forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet and neck bands by weakening or paralyzing the active muscles responsible for these wrinkles. Of interest is that 856,000 people received this treatment during 2001, according to statistics compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgery. It has also been shown to be effective in relieving migraines and excessive sweating of the hands and armpits. It is often used together with chemical peel or microdermabrasion to help smooth lines and wrinkles non-surgically. There are very few side effects, and the injections are done through a small needle making it virtually painless. Botox® has a high level of safety.

In my own practice, I have injected hundreds of patients. The only problems I have seen is that once in a while a patient is resistant to the drug and sees little or no benefit. It takes about 2-5 days for effects to be noticed. Results usually last 3-4 months, at which time the injections are repeated. After 3-4 sessions (usually about 1 year), smaller less frequent doses are used for maintenance. I have been impressed with the cosmetic improvement of frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow's feet. Excellent results have been achieved for migraine headaches, especially when we can identify a specific trigger area (start of the headache). This too lasts about 3-4 months.

Almost all of my patients are on our skin care program to combine the best of facial rejuvenation with healthy, radiant skin.

You might like to visit www.plasticsurgerypa.com our plastic surgery website which contains considerable information and an extensive "before" and "after" photo gallery. We plan to create a photo gallery for Botox in the near future.

Finally, we will be in Las Vegas next week, attending a major conference on esthetic plastic surgery. There will be numerous booths showing off the "latest and greatest" skin care products which we will be testing and evaluating. More on this in future emails.

Remember, it takes more energy and muscular activity to frown than to smile!

Happy Smiles!
