Depending on the sensitivity of your skin to topical retinoids, you may want to consider Retrinal Cream which is available in two strengths -- 0.05% and 0.1% as a healthy alternative to tretinoin that contains stable and powerful concentrations of Vitamin A. Retrinal Cream is less irritating to your skin with a smaller chance of redness, flaking and peeling and does not require a prescription.

Vitamin A is an integral component of any advanced skin care program. It is incorporated into the products as physician strength retinyl palmitate or the stronger compound retinol. The strongest version of Vitamin A is tretinoin (Retin-A).

Two key components of any quality skin care system are:

  • Exfoliation, the more rapid shedding of dead surface cells, allows better penetration of skin care products and more rapid cellular turnover. Exfoliation is accomplished with the use of glycolic based products.
  • Vitamin A products improve the quality of the skin's collagen layer.

Vitamin A Benefits:

  • Improves density of dermal collagen
  • Improves skin elasticity, tone and texture
  • Smooths skin surface and improves appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin A is an antioxidant that helps rejuvenate the skin by improving the texture and blood supply of the deeper collagen fibers. Vitamin A is also helpful in reversing damage caused by toxins such as smoking and irradiation from the sun. Vitamin A also helps thicken the skin; and because of this, it improves fine wrinkling.

Weaker concentrations and formulations of Vitamin A are incorported into many of the MD Forte skin care products that we carry on Skincare-MD.com and are useful for those with sensitive skin or mild damage. The spectrum advances to the use of stronger concentrations of tretinoin as used in the Obagi Nu-Derm Advanced Skin Care System.

Pregnancy and Nursing Advisory:

In an effort to avoid injury to the developing baby, most skin care topicals have not been clinically tested on pregnant or nursing women; therefore, we advise that they not be used. Products containing hydroquinoine  and tretinoin or similar topicals such as products containing retinol should NOT be used when pregnant or nursing. You should also discontinue the use of skin care products containing these ingredients for at least one month before contemplating pregnancy. If in doubt, please refer to the product insert for further information and consult with your physician.
