Advanced Skin Care Products
Many of the MD Forte advanced skin care products contain glycolic acid in different strengths. Glycolic acids are part of the Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) compounds. Applying glycolic acid products results in exfoliation. As the skin becomes conditioned to glycolic compound treatments, stronger concentrations of glycolic compound can be used. This results in a deeper exfoliation without the discomfort or burning, redness or irritation. It is important to maintain the program daily (or twice a day) to avoid the buildup of keratin and dead cells. In this way, moisturizing creams will penetrate more deeply.
Using the MD Forte 4-Step Daily Regimen (Cleanse, Renew, Hydrate and Protect), you will be able to attain visibly smoother and softer skin, diminished appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increased skin hydration and suppleness, balanced skin tone and improvement in oily or acne-prone skin.
The Kinerase line of skin care products contain kinetin, the same natural substance that helps plants retain moisture, to help your skin regain and retain a healthier, more hydrated appearance.
The Kinerase line of skin care products provide gentle moisturization and can be used for sensitive skin, fragile skin, retinoid intolerance and rosacea, eczema or dermatitis. The Kinerase skin care products does not cause sun sensitivity, nor does it contain any skin care acids (i.e., Glycolic, Salicylic, etc.). For more information on the daily application of the Kinerase line of skin care products, refer to the Kinerase Daily Skin Care Regimen.
Obagi-C Rx System combines a patented formula of 4% prescription strength Hydroquinone (lightening agent for uneven pigmentation) and professional strength Vitamin C to deliver superior penetration to all levels of the skin resulting in Photolumines Skin. The name was chosen to describe the more radiant, luminescent skin that results from the combination of well-known ingredients such as Vitamins C and E, hydroquinones, hyaluronidase (to help hydrate the skin), glycolics (for exfoliation) and sunscreens. True radiance comes from within as regeneration of skin is improved. The Obagi-C Rx System helps your skin become brighter with measurable radiance. This system will also smooth and hydrate your skin as well as even out your skin tone. The Obagi-C Rx System of products delivers key ingredients to all layers of the skin. To achieve maximum results, we recommend that you follow the Obagi-C Rx Recommended Daily System Application.
Sun damaged skin often shows early wrinkling, areas of uneven pigmentation, and areas of scaling (actinic keratoses which are precursors of skin cancer). Hormonal changes from aging, contraceptives and pregnancy can also cause brown spots. Many of these problems can be improved by using the Obagi Nu-Derm System.
The Obagi Nu-Derm Advanced Skin Care System is designed to restore health to sun and smoke damaged skin, as well as even out pigmentary problems involving the face and other areas of the body. The Nu-Derm system corrects surface discoloration and blemishes. It also penetrates into the skin to stimulate skin cell renewal, improve circulation and helps to rebuild collagen. The tretinoin (anti-oxidant Vitamin A cream—brand name Retin-A cream) in the Obagi Nu-Derm System stimulates increased vascularity to the important collagen layer of skin, thereby causing the collagen to thicken. This is the reason why fine lines tend to improve or disappear entirely. The normal barrier function of the skin is restored, making skin less sensitive and better able to hydrate properly.
The Obagi Nu-Derm Daily Regimen will also give you a step by step description and usage information.
Skin Care Services
At times, the use of an advanced skin care program can be enhanced by a deeper form of exfoliation, such as microdermabrasion or mild chemical peels. Together with skin care products, these treatments will speed up the entire exfoliation process. Candidates for this combined approach are patients with mild to moderate sun damage, early wrinkling, or dull looking skin. Patients with more advanced sun damage, especially with blotchy pigmentation, deeper wrinkling, pre-cancerous lesions or acne scarring may want to consider a more aggressive skin care system, such as Obagi Nu-Derm and a deeper form of resurfacing such as dermabrasion, chemical peels or laser resurfacing.
In my practice at the Plastic Surgery Professional Association in Manchester, New Hampshire, I use advanced skin care programs first, followed by a variety of procedures for facial rejuvenation. For sun-damaged skin, wrinkles and pre-cancerous conditions, such as actinic keratosis (scaling lesion), I tend to use the Obagi Nu-Derm System first followed by chemical peels or laser resurfacing. I find both methods to be helpful with skin rejuvenation. For acne scarring and light scarring I favor microdermabrasion or dermabrasion. For pigmentary problems, wrinkles and laxity, I have had excellent results with the Obagi Nu-Derm System followed by an Obagi Blue Peel. Patients then continue with their advanced skin care products after healing.

The following resurfacing procedures remove the top layers of skin allowing the skin to heal from the deeper dermal layers. This helps remove damaged superficial skin which is replaced by healthier more vibrant skin (resurfacing). Chemical peel, dermabrasion, laser and the Obagi Blue Peel are all performed in our outpatient surgi-center using a combination of sedation and local anesthesia.
Chemical Peel
Chemical peels improve sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented, or coarsely wrinkled facial areas by peeling away the skin's top layers. A variety of chemicals are available including TCA (trichloreatic acid), phenol and croton oil. These chemicals create a light burn on the outer layers of skin in a controlled fashion. Different concentrations will cause varying depths of skin removal.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is used to reduce surface irregularities that result from granular appearing skin, depressed scars, acne, lip lines, and deep pores. Dermabrasion involves the mechanical removal of the outer skin layers by a rapidly rotating cylinder covered with fine diamond chips or wires. Microdermabrasion, used for less severe problems, is described below.
Laser
Laser resurfacing uses beams of concentrated, high-intensity light to remove the skin's top layers. This procedure refinishes damaged areas and smoothes fine wrinkles.
Obagi Blue Peel
The Obagi Blue Peel reduces wrinkles, pigmentary problems and sun damage. The Obagi Blue Peel (an application of TCA mixed with a special blue base) should be preceded by 8-12 weeks of conditioning with the Obagi Nu-Derm System. The Obagi Blue Peel removes the surface layers of aged and damaged skin from the face or other parts of the body. These dead skin cells are replaced by healthier ones, allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface. One or more coats of the Obagi Blue Peel will be applied.
The following procedures are done in the office without the need for local anesthesia, and patients can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.
Botox Injections
Botox is a series of injections designed to inactivate facial muscles that produce wrinkles, thus improving the appearance of frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow's feet.
Glycolic Peel
Also known as the "Beverly Hills Lunch Time Peel" because people can resume their day-to-day activities immediately after treatment. This procedure is a chemical exfoliation which removes the micro-thin top layer of skin, smoothing and softening skin while diminishing fine lines.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion exfoliates and smoothes the skin with a jet of micro crystals sprayed and vacuumed across the skin's surface, removing dead skin cells and improving mild contour irregularities due to granularity of the skin, pores, mild acne scars, and fine lines and wrinkles. This is a mechanical exfoliation and allows immediate return to daily activities.
Facial Fillers
Restylane and Radiesse are used to fill depressed areas, acne scarring, facial wrinkles, nasolabial creases (laugh lines) and lip lines.
