Skin Care for Dry Hands and Feet - MD Forte Hand & Body Cream and MD Formulations Face & Body Scrub People who are exposed to chemicals (e.g. hairdressers) or excess exposure from over washing (e.g. health care workers, Mom’s with babies in the house) and people living in colder harsher climates are particularly prone to dry hands and skin breakdowns such as painful cracking of the finger tips. MD Forte Hand & Body Cream It is a common problem but hard to treat. Using preventative measures as well as active measures is the best line of defense. Daily prevention includes the use of an exfoliant (MD Forte Hand and Body Cream – 20% glycolic compound once or twice a day. Using this therapy on hands, arms, legs, and feet immediately after towel drying will help to supply adequate skin moisture. The use of gloves, whenever possible - while washing dishes, cleaning with water or chemicals, and when exposed to any other chemicals - will also help to maintain adequate skin moisture. MD Formulations Face and Body Scrub to Exfoliate Another great exfoliation product for your hands and feet, as well as your face, is MD Formulations Face & Body Scrub. MD Formulations Face and Body Scrub is formulated with an advanced, patented Glycolic Compound (15%) that automatically exfoliates by gently loosening and dissolving dull old surface skin cells. It effectively exfoliates the skin on the body, yet is gentle enough to polish the skin on the face. MD Forumations Face & Body Scrub iis pH balanced (pH 3.8), dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic and allergy tested. Skin Care Treatments for Actual Cracking, Breakdown of Dry Skin If a fissure (actual cracking) begins, I use polysporin ointment for three to five days on the involved area. Avoid Neosporin or any topical antibiotic ointment that contains neomycin, which may cause allergy and contact dermatitis. Then cut off the “finger” of an over-the-counter disposable glove (latex free for those with latex allergies), place the finger cot over the involved finger and sleep with the finger protected. This usually allows healing within two to three days. If longer therapy is needed, switch to Vaseline. Although Vaseline is not normally used on the face (causes plugged pores), it may be used on the hands and feet especially at bedtime for stubborn dryness. The Obagi NuDerm System is an excellent skin care system that restores health to the skin, without the need for moisturizers (glycolic acids bind with water improving the hydration of the skin). It is best to use this system before dryness and cracking of the hands and fingers takes place, such as in the fall before winter dryness. (For more information hands, see Aging Hands article and Obagi NuDerm System for Non-facial Areas article.) Please note: People with contact dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis are best treated by a dermatologist.
